Each year, the Charlie Bell Scholarship is awarded to a young adult who has made significant accomplishments in their education through the challenges of chronic illness.

The scholarship is a celebration to the legacy of McDonald’s Charlie Bell who was a passionate champion of continued education for sick children.

This year at Ronald McDonald House Charities WA, the Charlie Bell Scholarship recognised the achievements of two outstanding individuals, supported by the RMLP, who exemplified determination, positivity, and belief in their future. One of those recipients is Amber Medlock.  

Amber has multiple diagnoses including: Ehlers Danlos Syndrome, Gastroparesis, Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome, Chronic Anemia and Anxiety.

Despite these medical challenges, Amber has completed her Year 12 certificate at All Saints’ College in Perth.

“Being chronically ill I’ve grown up around doctors, nurses and other vital health care workers developing a strong passion for becoming a health care industry worker. I intend to study the Bachelor of Nursing and Pre-Medicine Certificate.”

Over the last 3 years, Amber has also maintained a part-time job at McDonald’s Kwinana. In 2020 Amber completed her Certificate 2 in Retail Services at McDonald’s Kwinana and is now progressing her Certificate 3.

“During my first 6 months of employment I was promoted to a Crew Training role and made part of the safety squad. After I turn 18, I plan to go on course, where I will be taught the required skills needed for the management position.”
